What is a lamacoid tag?

A lamacoid tag is an engraved plastic label made from a two-layer sheet. The top layer is one colour and the core is another. Our laser removes the top layer where the letters go, so the text shows in the core colour. Nothing is printed, so nothing can fade or rub off.

That is why electricians, mechanical contractors and plant maintenance teams use lamacoids for anything that has to stay readable for years: panels, valves, disconnects and machinery. You will also see them called lamicoids, phenolic tags or engraved plastic tags.

Common colour combinations

Your project spec always comes first. When there is no spec, these combinations are the usual starting point:

ColourTypical use
White text on redFire, emergency stops, emergency power
Black text on yellowCaution and hazard warnings
White text on greenSafety equipment, first aid, normal state
White text on blueInformation and mandatory-action labels
White text on blackGeneral equipment and panel labelling
Black text on whiteGeneral labelling, circuit identification

How to order lamacoid tags

  1. Send your list. A spreadsheet with one row per tag works best: the text, the quantity, and the size if you know it.
  2. Tell us the details. Colour combination, mounting method, and whether the tags go indoors or outdoors.
  3. Approve the proof. We send a digital proof of the layout. Nothing is engraved until you sign it off.
  4. We engrave and cut. Tags are laser engraved and cut to size, with holes where you need them.

Need metal tags for high heat or chemicals instead? See our industrial laser marking service. For custom shapes and signs, see laser cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about our services.

What is a lamacoid?

Lamacoid is the common Canadian name for an engraved plastic tag made from a laminated sheet: a thin top layer of one colour over a core of another. The laser removes the top layer, so the text shows in the core colour. Because the colour is part of the material, the text cannot wear off like printing can.

Is it spelled lamacoid or lamicoid?

Both spellings are used in Canada for the same product, and you will see each on specs and purchase orders. Phenolic tag and engraved plastic tag mean much the same thing.

What is the difference between lamacoid and phenolic?

Phenolic is the original laminate: rigid, heat-resistant and somewhat brittle. Many tags sold as lamacoid today use acrylic-based laminates, which are less brittle and come in more colours. If your spec names a material, tell us and we will match it.

Can you make tags from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Send a CSV or Excel file with one row per tag, and we import the text, numbers and quantities directly. This avoids retyping errors on large runs.

Do I get to check the tags before you make them?

Yes. We send a digital proof for you to approve before production. On request, we can also engrave a sample on your chosen material so you can check size, contrast and readability.

How will the tags be mounted?

Tell us how you plan to fix them (adhesive, screws, rivets or cable ties) and where they will go. We confirm the backing and any laser-cut holes in your quote.

Which colour combination should I use?

Follow your site's spec or the engineer's drawings first. Without a spec, white on red is common for fire and emergency equipment, black on yellow for caution, and white on black or black on white for general labelling.

What sizes can you make?

We make most tag, label and nameplate sizes. The largest size is set by the engraving area of our laser, so very large signs may not fit. Send us your sizes and we confirm them in your quote.

How long does an order take?

Most lamacoid orders are ready in 3 to 5 business days. Very large runs can take longer, and we confirm the date in your quote.

Do you ship lamacoid tags outside Nova Scotia?

Yes. We ship lamacoid tags and labels across Canada and to the United States.
